A love song from honolulu to lisbon in the key of spicy grilled chicken, cold beer and vino verde. Aloha piri piri is a sauce company and occasional pop-up Restaurant.
At the start of the 20th century, over 20,000 Portuguese migrated to Hawaii to work on the sugar plantations. With them came pao dolce, malasadas, linguica (aka portuguese sausage), and the ukelele. So many things in Hawaii go so well with a little Portuguese.
While spending time in Lisbon, I was struck by the deep connections between Portuguese food and the food of my hometown. I loved the spicy, lemony piri piri chicken served with good rice and simple salads. They brought back memories of Kapi'olani park cookouts, potlucks after little league, and friends backyards. It tasted like Aloha. I hope you think so toO.
